Review :
Johnny Desmond escapes SQ in the company of brutal Richard Devon
I was very pleasantly surprised by this excellent late noir, beautifully photographed in widescreen. The story is fast moving but time is taken to develop characters. There are surprises along the way and plenty of complications that add interest. Fred Sears directed; he usually can be counted on.
Desmond, who has been a pilot, is in prison with Richard Devon, a convict without any scruples. Devon plays the part well. He's not a familiar name, but he has a familiar face what with all the TV work he did subsequently. Devon has been working on Desmond, getting them into a low-security facility near an airfield from which they can escape. A third convict, Roy Engel, latches on to their plan, and his presence complicates matters considerably because he's after the cash stash that the untrustworthy Devon has promised to Desmond.
Plenty of suspense both as they make their getaway and afterwards.
Once out and on the run, they must recover the loot. Desmond has personal problems on the side, with a wife who is divorcing him and her sister, Merry Anders, who loves him.
Soon enough the cops are on the hunt for associates of Devon who may lead them to the escapees.
All of this is crisply photographed with the story being told in an unsentimental and realistic way.
Good entertainment.
