Excellent to Watch

I have the feeling that this issue of this film on DVD is only a matter of months now. Picture quality and sound are excellent given when it was made. Will appeal to all fans of WW2 movies and illustrates values and heroism which unfortunately seem to have been forgotten today ! It is not a film of great action but the plot maintains the tension throughout and suspense is maintained till the very end. The quotation of a few lines read from a poem conjointly with the view of the sea produced a strange effect on me - although the stories are completely different, I could see some similarities with The Day of the Jackal. Definitely recommended.

An 18yo Natalie Wood and ... um not much else.

OK, first things first. This isn't a good film, no insights on the meaning of life here, not even a good proper noir ending. But with Raymond Burr playing a psychopathic "Lenny-type" villain who kidnaps a fetching young Natalie Wood, who could possibly not recommend this film? Filmed a year after her role in "Rebel Without a Cause" the alluring 18yo Wood is so at the top of her game that she reportedly coaxed the homosexual Burr into her bed during filming of this crime drama. Wood, whose drowning off Catalina Island back in 1981 was shrouded in such suspicion that the LA Coroner's Office was still investigating the case in 2013! Shame they don't make proper Noirs anymore, as the story of her final wild weekend would probably make a pretty good one. If Natalie isn't your cup of tea, feel free to pass on this film.

Marston arrives and announces to commanding officer Captain Riordan that he has lost his fort and most of his men to an Indian attack and that he, as ranking officer, is assuming command. Riordan, a young, but sensible officer, is outraged when he learns that Marston, posted out west for having lost his 1500-man command during a Civil War battle, has ordered the entire fort's complement, totally unprepared for combat and outnumbered, to march out against experienced Indian warriors.

Drama set in the west that makes some sharp observations

More of an army drama set in the West vs. a Western this has solid direction and some good actors. Victor Mature is hammy but Guy Madison gives a stronger performance here than was usual for him, relaxed and assured. Robert Preston is the cruel commander who is revealed early on as a soulless martinet. He is married to a soft and startlingly blond Anne Bancroft who is good but whose role is incidental. The film makes some veiled and some pointed references to early pioneers disregard for the ways not only of the Indians but of trappers and others who had easily coexisted with them destroying their way of life as valueless merely because it was not the settlers way.

Johnny Desmond escapes SQ in the company of brutal Richard Devon

I was very pleasantly surprised by this excellent late noir, beautifully photographed in widescreen. The story is fast moving but time is taken to develop characters. There are surprises along the way and plenty of complications that add interest. Fred Sears directed; he usually can be counted on.

Desmond, who has been a pilot, is in prison with Richard Devon, a convict without any scruples. Devon plays the part well. He's not a familiar name, but he has a familiar face what with all the TV work he did subsequently. Devon has been working on Desmond, getting them into a low-security facility near an airfield from which they can escape. A third convict, Roy Engel, latches on to their plan, and his presence complicates matters considerably because he's after the cash stash that the untrustworthy Devon has promised to Desmond.

Plenty of suspense both as they make their getaway and afterwards.

Once out and on the run, they must recover the loot. Desmond has personal problems on the side, with a wife who is divorcing him and her sister, Merry Anders, who loves him.

Soon enough the cops are on the hunt for associates of Devon who may lead them to the escapees.

All of this is crisply photographed with the story being told in an unsentimental and realistic way.

Good entertainment.

Simon Sparrow rides again!

This entry in the "Doctor At Large" series has a great cast but little direction. The film is really little more than a series of picaresque encounters, enlivened by a solid support cast that largely manages to overcome Ralph Thomas's heavy-handed direction. Dirk Bogarde and Muriel Pavlow are both okay, but it's a pity so much of the plot is given over to Donald Sinden, who is the least graceful member of the cast. He tries vainly to give a Kenneth More edge to the part. Shirley Eaton looks great. It's a real shame her role is so small. And speaking of small roles, Dr Richard Gordon can be spotted in the brief scene with James Robertson Justice. He's the diminutive doctor in the green (? -- my still is in black-and-white) cap and gown.

Average Western

I liked this film when I saw it as a kid. I've always enjoyed western with gunmen, quick draws, duels in the dusty streets, who's fastest and so on. And I still do. However when you grow older you get more demanding in some aspects about movies you didn't even notice as a kid.

As I recall "Johnny Concho" I have yo agree with some reviewer here that says it's not believable that a whole town will just do what Johnny says and give him whatever he wants just because his brother is a top gunman. Nor it is believable either -and this is my own- that a cowardly man will push the things too far even if his brother is a top gunman. That's mainly what demerits this picture: the plot is hard to swallow.

That aside -which is no minor item- "Johnny Concho" has good moments, adequate atmosphere, good photo and more than acceptable performances, that make it a film to see for western fans.

Roll over Beethoven - Farewell Frankie Vaughan.

Frankie Vaughan was 29 when "These dangerous years" was released,a little elderly for a teenage idol, but this was in the days of David Whitfield, Ronnie Hilton,Ruby Murray(yes THAT Ruby Murray - now immortalised in Cockney rhyming slang)Joan Regan and a lot of other perfectly nice but not particularly youthful singers filled the Top Twenty. He was awarded a seven year contract with Anna Neagle/Herbert Wilcox productions, having made his film debut in "Ramsbottom Rides Again" two years earlier."These Dangerous Years" (Allegedly the time between when a young man left school and when he was "called up") was based partly on his own experiences in Liverpool a decade or so previously. He sings "Cold cold shower" and "Isn't this a lovely evening" as well as the title song in the style to which his admirers had become accustomed. He sneers and shows off his well - oiled locks, but is a far from convincing bad boy despite his provenance. "The lady is a square" and "Heart of a man" were no better, but he was half - decent in "Let's make love",but, movie - wise,it all went downhill from then on. With the arrival of Cliff and Tommy and Billy and Marty,Mr Vaughan switched smoothly to "all-round entertainer" status and headlined all round the country for years. "These Dangerous years" is an intriguing record of a time when British Pop was pausing for breath after years of taffeta dresses and white open - necked shirts with cravats before reaching for it's guitar and and crew-neck pullover. Mr Vaughan wasn't what teenagers in 1957 were reaching out for. My father was a great admirer of his, praising his admirable involvement in Boys' Clubs. What neither he nor Mr Vaughan knew was that most boys wouldn't be seen dead in a Boys' Club unless dragged there by a parent. The first Elvis and Gene Vincent records were coming out. After we'd heard "Be - Bop a Lula" we didn't want to play table tennis and drink Tizer. We were no longer happy to have our musical taste imposed on us. When we went out and bought "Heartbreak Hotel" it was our Declaration of Independence, our announcement that we were no longer prepared to be patronised by films like "These Dangerous Years". "Roll over Beethoven" then, and farewell Frankie Vaughan.

Nostalgic musical

I saw this movie when it first came out. I was in my early teens and so just the right age for it and oh it seemed so romantic! I managed to get an ep of some of the music - wish I knew where that ep got to, I've lost it. But I never managed to see the movie again until quite recently on TV - it's been shown a few more times since.

I was never a real jazz enthusiast however so much as I enjoyed all the fun and games at the school with the young musicians and their impressive teacher played by John Mills in a such lively youthful performance that nicely presages his later great dramatic talents, the music itself didn't stay in my memory. Only a year or two later we young people were stunned and delighted by the first rock 'n roll - I heard Rock Around the Clock for the first time in a Hancock's Half Hour, believe it or not, which very amusingly guyed Blackboard Jungle, and I was enthralled - by the music as much as Hancock, ie. Next came Elvis and Heartbreak Hotel, and the music and style and youthful behaviour of It's Great to be Young morphed into energetic rock dancing and Elvis's sexy gyrations.

It's Great to be Young is a splendid period piece now, one of the last gasps if you like of the pre-beat music generation but still enormous fun.

A low budget guilty pleasure

Lon Chaney's face will remind you of jello as too many close-ups of Chaney's face dominate this cheesy, very low budget film.

Chaney is Butcher Benton a penny ante criminal who's been set-up by his lawyer and gangster pals. But he doesn't die in the electrical chair, or by lethal injection either. He just gets mad.

He wants revenge on the lawyer and gangster pals who set him up to take the fall.

The film is done in dragnet documentary style which adds to the campiness of the whole affair considerably. The on-location filming is particularly interesting. It's of Los Angeles' long defunct Angel's Flight area--just prior to it being a victim of urban renewal. L.A. once had cable cars and you'll see them here.

If you're in the mood, you'll have a great time with this low budget, campy, film.

Not The Horse's Perspective

Any resemblance between this rather pedestrian film and the Anna Sewall novel is not just coincidental, it's non-existent. Courage Of Black Beauty is about a horse with the name of Black Beauty and that's about it.

The film begins with the birth of the colt and John Bryant the owner plans to give it to his young son Johnny Crawford who's been staying with his grandmother since his mother died. The kid has been quite the handful. Widower Bryant is also at loose ends because of his wife's death, but he's gotten somewhat interested in widow Diane Brewster with her daughter Mimi Gibson who are Bryant's neighbors.

Given just what I've told you I think you have some idea where this film is going. Throw in J. Pat O'Malley the old ranch hand and a German Shepherd dog that Mimi Gibson owns and you've got all the ingredients of a kid's film.

The story Black Beauty which is a children's classic became so because Sewall wrote it from the horse's perspective. Courage Of Black Beauty is definitely not that. It looks like it was shot with a Kodak brownie camera, the production values just aren't there.

The kids may like it, the grownups will thank the producers they only have 78 minutes of film to endure.

Go Baby Go!

Bit of fluff about a teenage girl named Clarabel (child actress Margaret O'Brien in a grown-up role), living in a trailer on a Kentucky horse ranch, who falls in love - with the new little chestnut filly just born on the ranch, who she names "Glory". When Glory becomes a yearling, Clarabel's "Gram" (Charlotte Greenwood) puts the horse up for sale (she has warned Clarabel to "never fall in love with one horse") for they need the money badly - but sad, sad Clarabel is helped out by local millionaire youth Chad and a horse doctor who prevents the sale. Clarabel and Chad have tons in common since, after all, all he talks about is horses, apparently - one problem, it's rumored he is engaged to one Candy Trent, who is one rich stuck-up snob. Well, Glory is trained for racing and proves to be a fast runner, and Clarabel decides to enter her prized horse in the "Kentucky Derby", even though it's rare for a filly to have a chance to win against the colts.

This film is a decent B-movie with a racehorse theme, mildly entertaining, painlessly pleasant. It oddly switches gear about the middle of the way through into a semi-musical (with several rather mediocre songs thrown in). Clarabel plays guitar and sings to her horse, then suddenly she is heard in the stables by a good-looking radio celebrity and hired to sing on his show, a second little romance to follow for her (but you just know she'll always be loyal to horse-lovin' Chad). There is a bit of history of thoroughbreds related at the beginning of the film including a shot of real-life Triple Crown winning race horse Citation; the finale features real footage of a Kentucky Derby race. For fans of Margaret O'Brien, it is so nice to see her in one of her almost adult roles - she's a charmer, but unfortunately the weak script doesn't really give her much of a chance to shine here. A side story features favorite character actor Walter Brennan as her "Uncle Ned" who constantly bickers and yells back and forth with Clarabel's Gram (but it appears they secretly really like each other!). Cute, lightly entertaining film - nothing great though.

Overwrought Melodrama

Slinky Marylee (Dorothy Malone) is in love with nonchalant Mitch (Rock Hudson); Mitch is in love with virtuous Lucy (Lauren Bacall); Lucy is in love with jealous Kyle (Robert Stack); and Kyle is in love with the bottle. And they're all rolling in Texas oil money. Despite their wealth, however, none of these people are really happy. But, hey, what would a sudsy soap opera be without romantic entanglements, despair, tears, verbal conflict, and tons of melodrama? All we need here is Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing and Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie.

Although Robert Stack is miscast as a lady's man, he gives the only credible performance of the bunch, a feeble reason for watching this high-strung and overwrought spite-fest. Otherwise, the characters in "Written On The Wind" are neither interesting nor realistic.

And most of the major cast members are miscast. Rock Hudson not only gives a wooden performance, he's laughable as a wheeler-dealer Texas oil man. Dorothy Malone tries to steal the show, but her performance is all atwitter and way over-the-top. And why Lauren Bacall was selected to play a sweet, innocent outsider is a mystery suitable for an Agatha Christie novel.

Further, the film's plot gives away part of the ending, before the story even begins. And while oil is the source of the Hadley family wealth, the characters never engage in any actual oil business.

Color cinematography is competent, and one of the least offensive elements of the film. But the background music is manipulative and as overwrought as the characters.

"Written On The Wind" is another 1950s Douglas Sirk directed melodrama, and arguably one of the worst, owing to a campy plot, overwrought characters, very bad casting, and some rather poor acting.

Jon Hall, who starred in several exotic adventure-romances with Dorothy Lamour and Maria Montez in the thirties and forties, seems to have had a dual purpose in making this rather retro sarong film. One was to promote his new underwater movie equipment rental business (the plot provides for lots of shots of Jon and friends diving for pearls, engaging in underwater tussles, looking at fishies, etc.) The other was to express a love that dared not speak its name, at least to Dorothy or Maria. The lumpish Polynesian princess that's Jon's nominal love interest appears to take second place in his affections to a puckish little brown boy in an abbreviated pareu, and there's a lot more buff male bodies on display on his island paradise than the expected female ones. As ever, however, the cutest item on display is Peter Lorre, in an all too brief comic turn as a visiting colonial circuit judge.

Pretty decent Grade-B movie that is hard to find. I saw this on late night television in new york in the 1990s and surprised to find out that I recorded it on my VCR. I enjoyed this movie more than 12 angry men and it was a delight to see a young Ricardo Montalban. Finding this movie could be almost next to impossible to find and one could only hope it shows up on Netflix because they do have quite a few of Grade-B movies. You won't find this movie on Turner Classic Movies because it doesn't classify as being a classic movie, but Ted Turner or someone else should start a cable channel showing Grade-B movies that star many actors and actresses early in their careers.

Two Great Stories of Wartime Poland

I personally think you have to be Polish or have studied a great deal of Polish history during World War II and, perhaps, the cultural history of Poland to understand everything in this film. But, it is a set of brilliant dark commentaries on men in time of war. In our first film, Scherzo alla Polacca, a man runs away from his duty during the Warsaw Uprising. He has been a selfish man and does not adapt well to sacrifice, but he reluctantly makes an attempt to do something for the cause without much real effect. This is dark comedy at its best and pokes fun at Hungarians as well as poking fun at opportunists during wartime.

Our second film, Ostinato Lugubre, tells the story of a group of Polish Officers encamped in a German Prisoner of War camp and details the everyday life of the men as they deal with their feelings, lack of privacy and their affection for one man who escaped. Did he really escape? This is the plot point that holds this story together so well. We witness brilliant acting and a deeply moving script.

This is considered one of Munk's great masterpieces and deserves a chance to be released on video. This was part of a festival at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Classy drama for the Double Indemnity pair

Stylish drama acted expertly by super professionals. The powerful duo of Stanwyck and MacMurray excel when paired together and this is a fine example of that. Sadly this film is somewhat obscure, a shame since it really does examine in simple terms the crisis a man faces when he realizes he has fallen into a rut without being aware of it. Another winner from Sirk and perhaps even better then some of his more renown films, which are certainly enjoyable if sometimes over the top and a little lurid, since this drama is muted and closer to real life. The problems the film examines seem rooted in the 50's consumerism but by looking a little deeper they are revealed to be universal and timeless issues. This was the final pairing of Barbara and Fred, all their collaborations are worth watching, although The Moonlighter is rather sketchy, but this is the only one showing them as a mature pair and it's a pity they didn't have a chance to make perhaps one more when they had reached old age since they brought out the best in each other.

Episodic Island Comedy

On a picturesque South Pacific island, during World War II, a US Navy base handles public relations. Unmarried star lieutenant Glenn Ford (as Max Siegel) takes visiting congressmen on a tour. Beautiful native schoolteacher Gia Scala (as Melora Alba) catches his eye. Enlisted sailor Earl Holliman (as Adam Garrett) likes the way pretty perfumed Anne Francis (as Alice Tomlen) "crosses her legs." Laidback young Russ Tamblyn (as Tyson) doesn't like washing teen-spirited sheets for war reporter Keenan Wynn (as Gordon Ripwell). Comic commander Fred Clark (as Clinton "Marblehead" Nash) is in charge. If you stick around, you'll see head-turning Eva Gabor (as Deborah "Debbie" Aldrich and foul-mouthed Mickey Shaughnessy (as Farragut Jones)...

The all-star cast is likable. However, the juvenile romances, snickering innuendo and silly slapstick don't mix well. Best part is a very funny episode involving Mr. Shaughnessy reputedly using what is politely called "The F-word," but you have to wade through much tediousness to get there. The title "Don't Go Near the Water" refers to the fact that the characters play on dry land – well, until we see Ms. Gabor's lacy black underwear. This was based on a novel, which suggests there might have been a more interesting story somewhere. Although Glenn Ford was then too big a movie star to do it, this would have made a fine half-hour situation comedy starring Mr. Ford, Mr. Clark and Mr. Tamblyn, who provide a solid anchor and cover their demographics.
