I know this movie to be true

This movie is considered a "classic" in my family; my Dad was the agent (brilliantly acted by Peter Graves) on whom the title character was based. Hollywood added a romance but other than that they got the story (based on a series of articles about my Dad in the Saturday Evening Post) right. Some message boards about the movie criticize Chuck Connors for over-acting, but he didn't; that's how it was. This movie is a good reminder of what we owe to a lot of America's unsung heroes who have taken on messy tasks over the years to make America a safer place. Thanks to my Dad and other agents the movie now looks like a dated "period piece" portraying world with which we do not have to be familiar.

Dr Miles Bennell returns his small town practice to find several of his patients suffering the paranoid delusion that their friends or relatives are impostors. He is initially skeptical, especially when the alleged dopplegängers are able to answer detailed questions about their victim's lives, but he is eventually persuaded that something odd has happened and determines to find out what is causing this phenomenon. This film can be seen as a paranoid 1950s warning against those Damn Commies or, conversely, as a metaphor for the tyranny of McCarthyism (or the totalitarian system of Your Choice) and has a pro- and epilogue that was forced upon Siegel by the studio to lighten the tone.

Classic chiller

A doctor comes to a hospital on a late night call to hear a man whom everybody else deems insane. The doctor persuades the man to be patient and tell his story. The man then tells the doctor about how a small California town has been invaded by some sort of alien seeds that grow into human clones...

Coming straight from the McCarthy era and general Cold War paranoia this is one scary movie. There is not a gun fired, not a drop of gore shed but the final effect of the film will stay with you for a good while. More contemporary film viewers might recognize the concept from John Carpenter's "The Thing" which itself was an update of the 1951 film. However, the themes of paranoia and tension are just as nail-biting and intense here.

There is a lack of visual punch that so many people are used to today, but just think of the historical context and the implications, basically use your mind! Then you'll see why the film scared studio executives so much that they forced Don Siegel to add an intro and outro to help soften the overall effect. It wasn't the best play in the book, but the film remains a great classic chiller. --- 9/10

Not Rated. It would most likely receive a PG from the MPAA, there are several tense moments, though no violence.

Donald O'Connor gives a poignant portrayal of someone who never existed

O'Connor is very good here and gets the elements of Buster's comic timing down very well, plus he is very moving as a composite figure of a silent star who, just as he is doing his best work, is overcome by talking film, and just can't come to terms with the fact that at such a young age he's been made a dinosaur overnight. The problem is, other than the alcoholism, the overspending, and the talkies putting a dent in the value of pantomime comedy, this just isn't Buster's life.

In Buster's biography it was stated that Paramount meant to turn Buster's actual three wives into the one screen wife, Gloria Brent (Ann Blythe). Somehow, though, Paramount mixed together eggs, butter, and flour and came up with a steak!. None of Buster's three wives were casting directors at any studio as the screen wife is. And this maudlin melodrama of Keaton matrimony is just plain fiction. The film shows Buster roughing it on vaudeville as a kid and often going hungry, landing a studio contract by sheer force of will as a young adult, and then being a savvy business fellow when dealing with fictitious "Famous Studios" when none of this is true. From the time Buster became part of his family's act as a small child, the act succeeded and the family lived very well, and the doors of Hollywood swung wide for Buster Keaton starting with his very first meeting with Roscoe Arbuckle in 1917. Only the coming of sound hurt Buster because he didn't have the money to go on independently, causing him to sign with MGM and conform to their movie factory standards.

I'd watch this to see Donald O'Connor given a rare chance to really show his versatility and his acting chops, but this is definitely not even close to Buster's life.

A couple of side notes of interest - The screenwriters were in such a hurry to shove something out the door that they got some key facts about the era wrong - The Jazz Singer being an all talking picture and Peter Lorre's character trying to unnerve Keaton by telling him that John Gilbert's contract was canceled after his first unsuccessful talkie are two falsehoods, but they are common enough myths. However, one part of the plot caused by their sloppy research is just plain hilarious if you actually know something about Keaton's life. You may wonder where the Lena Lamont-like star came from that Keaton pants over until she marries a duke (Rhonda Fleming as Peggy Courtney). Fictitious Peggy Courtney was modeled after Mae Murray, who married European royalty in the 1920's before torpedoing her own career. You see, the screenwriters got confused and got Mae Murray mixed up with Mae Busch, a Keystone comic with whom Keaton did in fact have an affair. Keaton and Mae Murray were never involved. Sometimes a good research department can be invaluable!

Enjoyable time-passer ...........

Fred MacMurray starred in a number of interesting color westerns in the 1950's. In this film, 3 brothers come face to face with violence, cowardice and personality conflicts. MacMurray , with his laconic sense of irony, shines in this film.

Jeffrey Hunter has the key role of the the young brother. Hunter was a great actor, who is best remembered to day for his role in The Searchers. He performs well in this one and is a good match for this interesting role.

This movie is only slightly above average, being aided by two fine actors at the top of their game. Worth a look for that alone ........

Jose Ferrer Director

Jose Ferrer should be better known as a director. Yes, it has some of the plot of Well's Kane, but it has more of the feel of a Jack Webb flick, he himself a greatly under rated director. Even Julie London, Webb's wife is in it.. Hard boiled hero, quirky supporting characters that are given a rounded humanity, and a great cast. See this film when it plays on Turner. And check out Webb's non Dragnet films; 30, the DI, Pete Kelly's Blues and The last time I saw Archie.

Low budget , but with an interesting plot ........

George Montgomery starred in several interesting westerns in a career that spanned several decades. This film, scripted by co-star Leo Gordon, was a very interesting change of pace for both.

Montgomery plays a one-eyed lawman, who once loved the woman now married to the character played by Leo Gordon. Gordon and Montgomery interact with great chemistry, varying between friendship and jealousy.

Leo Gordon was one of the great western villains and a pretty decent writer of scripts. In this film, he steals the show ---- playing a more sympathetic and well-rounded sort of cowpoke.

Not a great film, but western fans will like this one.

A spoof on the man degrading himself to any depths to make money even at the cost of another man's life.

A film, slickly directed by Chetan Anand and produced by Dev Anand's Navketan. A very good entertainer with very good music by Sachin Dev Burman. After having given music for a classic like "Devdas" in 1955, Burman da proved his versatality as he came up trumps with his musical score in this light hearted entertainer in 1956. Kishore Kumar's "Ai meri topi palat ke aa" and " Dene wala jab bhi deta, poora chhapad phaad ke deta" are lovely light numbers. So are the two duets by Kishore and Asha Bhosle, "Aji aaj koi na hamen chhediyo" and "Woh dekhen to unki inayat, na dekhen to rona kya"! Kishore's "Dukhi man mere, sun mera kehna" remains one of his best numbers ever. Dev Anand gave a good performance, while Sheila Ramani was a perfect foil to him.

Buggy

The film that helped usher in Hollywood's giant bug craze, this isn't half-bad. Special effects are pathetic even for the time, but the story is gripping enough and the acting first-rate. Peter Graves plays a scientist working on food growth via radiation. Grasshoppers get at these plants and grow to the size of a bus. They find humans much tastier than their usual fare. They invade Chicago after tearing up the countryside, and it's a race to the finish to see whether anything can be done to stop them before the Army nukes Chicago. Morris "Colonel Fielding" Ankrum is a grumpy general, and Peggie Castle is a reporter investigating the story. Lots of fun. We never see the monsters actually come into contact with any of the humans they devour, but the closeup facial shots of various actors about to be eaten are priceless.

and nicely upholstered too...

One of the final RKO radio films produced in the last leap of faith in 1956. THE FIRST TRAVELING SALESLADY is a very enjoyable light comedy. What sets it apart from TV shows like PETTICOAT JUNCTION or films like OKLAHOMA both of which it strongly resembles is the A studio production values which allow the film to take on a lavish western look more akin to CALAMITY JANE. It is a jalopy western set in the horseless carriage days of 1899. Ginger Rogers was 43 and Carol Channing was 35 in production and given the mature age of both and the feminist slant of the story, it makes for a liberating tone for a film of the mid 50s. It is well worth looking at the last 20 films made at the RKO studio in this period by RKO TELERADIO PRODUCTIONS who revived the label after Howard Hughes trashed it. All 1955-58 RKO films are very well made, above the prior years of Hughes. TRAVELING SALESLADY is beautiful to see and has visuals cluttered with style and color. I thought it quite lavish in some scenes with overstuffed furniture and antiques that must have helped see unloved props get a final airing. In widescreen and technicolor it must have resembled GIGI or THE MERRY WIDOW. The most hilarious scenes to really really lap up involve a very young Clint Eastwood (25 years old) kissing Carol Channing! Fantastic! They elope together in the last reel! The railway station Ginger arrives at earlier at is the same as seen in OKLAHOMA, the last big musical distributed by RKO; Their very last film a minor but snazzy musical was THE GIRL MOST LIKELY also beautifully produced. Shame they gave up, but their films of the time, terrific as they were and modern in tone, just did not include respectable profits to continue. All other studios big and small had at least one blockbuster in this period, but alas RKO and Republic did not and folded.

My Sassy Lady

This film had a one night showing in New York as a retrospective of the great Tatsuya Nakadai but it is Hideko Takamine's film. One of the great things about watching her is that her characters are so varied. She can play innocent and submissive, serious and comic. In this film, she plays assertive. This film from the great Naruse has her stretching her acting muscles,playing Oshima, a woman who goes through situations in which men treat her wrong. Somehow, in a sometimes fun way, she emerges intact and stronger. The film begins in 1912 and thats what the gist is of her character: Most Japanese (well. all) women were not assertive like this at the time. So, the film is a little innovative. Mr. Nakadai's role is relatively small, but memorable (at the screening three women whistled when he came on the screen. He was a heartthrob). The reason this film doesn't get a ten is because it drags in a few spots, mostly before the middle. It has a better second hour, so from there it is a much more enjoyable film. Not available on DVD with subtitles, I was very happy to see it. If it ever does come out, I recommend it. Its fun, and Ms. Takamine is, as usual, great in her role.

Lots of fun to watch if you aren't too serious about it.

A nice remembrance from childhood watching this one Saturday evening at my cousins place in Brooklyn. Probably a WOR channel 9 creature feature, but definitely one of the schlockiest of their stock. Still, what really sets these old 50s monster B and C flicks apart from today's low-rent stuff is the great seriousness of the characters and their delivery done with earnest. This style is standard fare from low-budget Corman through the cheapo AIP and Columbia stuff, and this is what makes these lesser efforts with poor quality effects rise to a level that makes them as enjoyable as the grade A Universal-International and 20th Century Fox sci-fi stuff.

A Republic comedy thriller

Well, I was not so surprised with this one. Republic Studios were used to make those sort of mixed up of thriller, westerns, comedies...

I would say it was their trade mark; for instance features with cars and phones...Such as Roy Rogers B westerns...

Back to AFFAIR IN RENO, we can see a normal guy - John Lund - who arrives in the Biggest Little City in the world - Reno - with one hundred grands in his coat. A little bullion in bank notes given by a wealthy man to a casino owner so that he marries his daughter...

And our hero discovers that he has a bodyguard, designed by the rich guy to protect him against people with bad purposes, a bodyguard in petticoat. Nothing less...

You can guess the following. I will tell no more about it.

A good time waster. And a RG Springsteen film is always worth for anyone who loves B movies.

An obvious goof

Technically this should be listed under "Goofs" as it not so much a review. While watching the film I noticed during the two scenes that occur around the breakfast table if you look out the window, just past the fake foliage, you will notice late 1950's cars whisking by on an obviously very busy street. The story is set on an isolated wooded estate 20 years after the death of Dr. Jekyll which should put this in the early 1900's. Gloria Talbott is seen wearing a corset and a bustle with high button boots and John Agar wears a striped jacket like those worn by barber shop quartets. Obviously there should not be sedans whizzing by the estate. The only reason I wanted to see this film was due to the participation of Gloria Talbot-a real 50's fave and quite the knockout. She did not disappoint.

This B-Western benefits from Emile Meyer's portrayal of a bandit and a much better than average plot.

Veteran character actor Emile Meyer stands out in this better than average B Western. He is ably supported by Rex Reason and Beverly Garland.

The plot in this film has much more depth than in the standard B flick. Local citizen Rex Reason is whipped and forced to flee the town of Cascade after killing his assailant in a fair fight. In his escape he blunders into the hideout of a bandit gang led by Meyer. Reason falls in love with Beverly Garland, who plays Meyer's daughter. "She's not one of us", Meyer says as the bandits vote to decide whether Reason will die or become one of them. Meyer casts his vote for Reason who becomes one of the gang. Later, Reason is captured in a bank holdup. He is given a choice between going to jail and returning to Cascade as sheriff. It seems that the wife of the man he killed has turned the town into a haven for outlaws. He returns to town and cleans it up in about 5 minutes. Outlaw Meyer is brought to jail by some soldiers. Reason quits his job, gives Meyer the keys and returns to the bandit camp for his lost love. This all sets up the final showdown which turns out pretty much like you'd expect in a B Western.

I enjoyed this film and would highly recommend it. My only problem with this film is that there was more potential in the story than was possible to develop on a B movie budget. As a result, some of the plot elements receive short shrift. Reason's cleaning up of Cascade is a good example. However, Meyer's portrayal of the bandit leader more than compensates for the film's shortcomings. He is very credible in this role.
