Romeo+Juliette

Dwarfed by the -superior- version of Zephirelli (1968),this Riccardo Freda movie in not devoid of interest ;the two principals who were 23 and 20 , were closer to the heroes'age in the play than the Cukor ones ,Leslie Howard (42!) and Norma Shearer (35!).

Geronimo Meynard who plays Romeo is youthful and rather cute ,but his performance is a bit monotonous -it was to be his very last movie- ;The same goes for Rosemary Dexter who is a lovely Juliet ,but we find it hard to believe that these two are eaten with desire and passion.

On the other hand ,the cinematography is splendid indeed ,with superb landscapes and the lovers are nicely filmed ;the movie is rather short,and all happens quickly ,perhaps too quickly ,with scenes too hurried for comfort,but there's never a dull moment;Freda ,who was good at horror movies ,suceeds in making the last scene in vault perfectly gruesome . Good use of classical music .

A clever framework for Jane Russell's spectacular physique!

The fifties provided its share of World War II films... The super classics being David Lean's "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and Fred Zinnemann's "From Here to Eternity." Although Raoul Walsh's "The Revolt of Mamie Stover," a closely related minor film, also bears some consideration...

The story, set in 1941, has Jane being escorted by the San Francisco Police to the entrance galley of a ship leaving town... She is advised not to return--ever!

Aboard the Hawaii-bound vessel, she meets science fiction novelist Richard Egan who proves to be the first man in her versatile lifetime who respects her as a person... Naturally she is, at the proper time, impressed...

Once they dock, she lands a job at the Bungalow Club, presided over by a domineering madam Agnes Moorehead...

According to the movie, servicemen were lining up just for the opportunity to dance and talk (but definitely nothing more) with Moorehead's "hostesses," specially the ever popular Jane who makes a memorable impression as a cynical sleazy dance-hall hostess...

Jane is seen avoided by the better element in town, who do not appreciate her patriotic contribution... Her conscience forces her to tell Egan: "No, Jimmy, I can't let you ruin your life... You can't lick the whole island-I've got a number on my back and they all know it."

Egan was positive that some compromise can be worked out, but in the meantime he goes off to war... The aerial Pearl Harbor Attack, on December 7, 1941, by the Japanese is also seen...

While he is away Jane is determined to make all the social abuse worth enduring and becomes the queen of the town's nightlife... Jane sees this as her only way to acquire wealth...

In the middle of the ludicrous plot Jane sang "Keep Your Eyes on the Hands" and "If You Wanna See Mamie Tonight." The latter tune apt to call up memories of Rita Hayworth's "Put the Blame on Mame" from Charles Vidor's "Gilda."

A rather conventional melodrama.

There's nothing out of place in The Feminine Touch, a by the numbers melodrama that tells the story of a group of student nurses as they make their way through school. The acting is fine, the direction competent and the story sufficiently interesting to hold the viewers attention. Add it up and you have a watchable movie, but really, not much more than that. Clichéd characters and situations are a major liability in this film. There's doe eyed Susan (Belinda Lee),the cynical world weary Pat (Adrienne Cory) and the handsome Dr Alcott (George Baker)all delivering flat, colourless dialogue in you've seen it all before situations. The film looks great in Technicolor and the pacing is good, but you get the sense that it could have been much better.

Those wacky Russians do it again!!

I really love the quirky nature of these Russian fairy tale films. Nutzoid english dubbing only enhances the warp factor (The US version entitled 'The Sword and the Dragon' even has Mike Wallace as a narrator) The characters are often quite bizarre (The makeup job on the wind demon is just too much, and I'm in love with the sword slinging dancing girl near the end of the film) Top it off with nifty puppetry (the dragon seems to clearly have been the inspiration for Japan's Ghidrah) makes this a true gem of kidvid madness!! I can't wait for the letterboxed Russian restoration which is scheduled to appear on DVD the end of 2001!!!

Claustrophobic!

I didn't know Kurosawa had even done a version of "The Lower Depths." I was very pleased with it. It took time to get the hang of all the characters. They came and went and I finally set my anchor on the landlord and his wife to help me to sort them all out. This film grows on you as you make your way from one conflict, one despairing soul to another. There are wonderful choreographed events and scenes, despite people being stuck in that one little room, in building where people hear garbage hit the roof. There is one scene in every one of Kurosawa's movies that I will always remember. I won't spoil it, but it comes at the very end. While these guys are down and out, they have so much personality and so much life; unfortunately, they have had their dreams crushed.

Yes Mifune is very good and dominates the screen, but I was equally impressed with the actor who played "Gramps." He is the wise one, the one who tries to keep it all together and make the place less of a hell on earth. He speaks with modesty and restraint and, because he has had a past, tries to prevent, especially Mifune from messing up his life.

One thing I need to get used to from watching so many of Kurosawa's movies is the wailing and screeching of the women. Is this a Japanese trait because hysterics play such a role in so many films.

UNTIDY IMMENHOF PART 2

This is part 2 of the so-called "Immenhof series". Although in principal it did not matter much who sat in the director's chair, this part with its already weaker story (than that of part 1) is not helped much by Volker von Collande's uninterested direction. It is a good thing that Fritz Arno Wagner was behind the camera, although he could not prevent that when finally something resembling a plot is starting (with the arrival of Hans Nielsen as the financial saver), the story telling becomes untidy.

The main attraction remain the regulars of the cast: the both attractive Heidi Brühl and Angelika Meissner with their catching acting and both routinists Margarete Haagen and Paul Henckels.

Well I can tell you this scared the bejeesus out of me when I was kid.

Watching it today, there are three things of note.

The first is the military footage. The virtual budget of this was millions of dollars because of the military supplied footage. It was defense policy to let the Soviets know of our massive three-tiered air defense and there was an office to so publicize. The idea was to convince the Russians that an attack couldn't possibly work, that the thing really existed. That's why the Pentagon subsidized these things. The scripts were therefore friendly to military success at the end, too.

A solid third of this is from the department of defense, no model planes here.

Perry Mason, the detecting lawyer was a literary phenomenon when this was made, the books about him being outsold only by the Bible. And there was a very popular TeeVee show based on him. Perry's own detective was a guy played by the detective here. And his sidekick is a Della Street (the third member of the gang) lookalike. It was like having Indiana Jones appear. The effect is lost today but was quite something in the day.

The third remarkable thing is what scares us. What we fear in our imagination is largely defined by movies. And what movies use to frighten us is tightly constrained by what they can show. In the fifties, that was often disappearing or morphing things, guys in rubber suits and small things made big by trick photography. "Them" was probably the first giant bug movie, but it used real bugs. This is already a second generation, using stop motion.

The footage of Aleutians — borrowed from an older film — is great, really great.

Can anybody tell me if this is the film that Anthony Newley fly,s a model flying saucer into the officers mess while on a pilots course at RAF Cranwell?.I must have seen this film in the early 60,s and the aircraft used would bring back many memories of watching 111sgn practising for the next season as the RAF display team. I am sure that any Pilot/Aircrew that went through RAF Cranwell in the 50/60,s would find this film of interest. I am also very interested in obtaining a copy in any format either the B/W or colour version.

Reliable actors try to overcome dirt cheap budget

"Listen, you poisoned a couple of wives and I cracked some Foreign Legion skulls, we belong here... or someplace like it." So says Devil's Island prisoner Rex Ingram to his buddy Lou Adler in a Cayenne saloon in "Hell on Devil's Island" This low budget effort has an interesting story about a crusading journalist (Helmut Dantine) who is trapped at the French penal colony and combines with an honest Governor (Robert Cornthwaite) to overcome a brutal forced labor racket. The heavies are led by a whip-wielding William Talman who snarls his way through his last feature appearance before making his mark as D.A. Hamilton Burger in the Perry Mason television show.

An ensemble of veteran performers tries hard and the script, despite a few off-center laughs, really isn't that bad. The picture is ultimately betrayed by a rock-bottom budget laden with cheap-looking television interiors and an excessive number of two-shot,close-ups of the actors. The exterior 'jungle' scenes strongly resemble the old Republic lot across the street from O'Brien's Bar and the 76 station on Ventura Blvd in Studio City or Topanga Canyon before the strip malls and tract houses completely took over. One sequence was filmed in the caves by Griffith Park.

Imagine a movie about Devil's Island that possesses the expansive cinematography of a Jack Webb helmed television episode and you have a pretty good overview of this picture.

Not too bad if you don't take it seriously.

Strock directed this film, another hybrid horror and juvenile delinquency yarn that stars Sandra Harrison as Nancy Perkins, a troubled teenager who is sent to live in an all-girl boarding school by her parents. She then meets evil Miss Branding(played by Louise Lewis) a professor who uses hypnosis and a medallion(Dracula's?) to control her, which results in Nancy becoming a murderous(and ugly) vampire, terrorizing the campus, and some visiting boyfriends of the girls... Silly film with a vague plot has no originality at all, and few scares, though the makeup is striking. Part of the "Teenage" monster fad of this time.

Boring

Thought this 1957 film starring some very great actors would be entertaining or at least a good murder mystery. The film takes place in a Utah Mountain Lodge where there are a large group of tourists and also behind the scenes very sick people running this lodge. The manager is a man who is handicapped and taken care of by his sister who waits on him hand an foot and this man seems to hate all kinds of women and is also a mental case. One night, a girl is murdered and slashed to death with a knife multiple times and it looks like they have a serial killer on their hands. Lex Baxter, Anne Bancroft and Mamie Van Doren all add a great deal to this story with their great supporting actors roles. There are other murders and the film goes completely around in circles until you have already figured out who the killer is and you can't wait for the film to end.

The film begins with the finishing of a water canal for the village set in the present. While trying to use more of their land to alleviate their poverty, Shamu's arms are crushed by a boulder. He is shamed by his helplessness and is humiliated by others in the village. Movie par excellence

This is perhaps one of the best if not the best Indian Movie ever made. A strong story line depicting the values and tribulations of rural India,this movie is backed up by some very powerful performances.All from Nargis,Suniel Dutt,Rajendra Kumar to Kanahiya lal are superb. The story revolves around Nargis and shows the trials and tribulations of her life. There are quite a few memorable sequences in the film. Starting from the scene when Nargis's one child has died due to malnutrition and the other two live ones are extremely hungry. In the moment of extreme despair when she decides to go to the village Baniya,her facial expression showing a mixture of pure contempt and extreme dejection are superb. A word must be said about the director of the movie,Mehboob Khan,right through out the movie one can see,his vision and creativity shining brightly. Every scene it seems has been hand crafted and all the sequences are closely linked to each other. The music too of the film is immensely pleasing to the ears. The songs give the aroma of the richness of the Indian village and are a treat to watch too. Above all the movie is about hope and values. Such a vivid interplay of emotions which are very close to the native Indian sensibilities is hardly ever seen in Indian cinema.The title is apt too surely this is the MOTHER India of all Indian films!

What's Wrong With This Picture?

Obviously, a great deal of time and money was lavished on this project. Producer Selznick intended it to be a vindication of a career that peaked with "Gone With The Wind" in 1939, and then began a long, slow, almost painful decline. By the mid fifties he had become something of a "has-been" in Hollywood. The result? Pretty much a miss. The book is probably unfilmable, of course, but the screenplay still leaves much to be desired. Rock Hudson is far too shallow to make a go at the over-the-top emotionalism this story needs. The usually wonderful Jennifer Jones, for whom this project was conceived, somehow doesn't seem to exhibit the idealism and resolve the part needs, and that she demonstrated with such seemingly effortlessness in many other films. The direction is stilted and sometimes downright awkward, more the fault of producer Selznick, I would bet, who had a reputation for micro-managing his films, than famed director Charles Vidor.

Simply put, I'm never convinced, not even for a moment, that what is happening is real and not just another movie. Too bad.

As he grows, his heart and circulatory system fail to keep pace with his growth, and he is gradually losing his mind as a result of reduced blood supply to his brain. He reaches 50 feet tall before his growth is stopped. By this time he has become insane. He escapes and wreaks havoc upon Las Vegas before he is finally stopped.

The Earliest of All Giant Movies

If you ask me, I think the effects in this movie are far more convincing than the special effects in Attack of the 50 Foot Woman! All thought in some of the effects scenes the giant did looked a little transparent but not badly! Glenn Manning growing kinda reminded me about the Harryhausen hit, "20 Million Miles to Earth" Which the Ymir grows at an alarming rate from earth's air. After seeing The Amazing Colossal Man and it's sequel War of the Colossal Beast, I'm always wondering what would happen if Glenn Manning had come face to face with Gaira from "War of the Gargantuas"? Would it be a fair fight? They appear to be both the same size! I just can't decide who would probably win! I think The Amazing Colossal Man is a must have for all old sci-fi fans. I just enjoy it for what it is.

Learning to Kill

Raised by a peace-loving Quaker mother, artist Alan Ladd (as Alexander "Alec" Austen) is nevertheless enlisted for World War II service. This interrupts his romance with attractive younger Dianne Foster (as Susan Cahill). In the Navy, Mr. Ladd meets a typical group of movie sailors. These include frequent co-star William Bendix (as "Frenchy" Shapiro), secretive Keenan Wynn (as Mike Edge), commander James Whitmore (as Warren Meredith) and roommate Efrem Zimbalist Jr. (as Doctor Blanchard). Stand up comic Joey Bishop plays an oddly attractive young sailor, and future "Alvin and the Chipmunks" creator Ross Bagdasarian provides the crew with dozens of Armenian woman.
