Watch Three Bad Sisters Trailer :

Review :

Cheap, a bit trashy and still a lot of fun and surprisingly effective.

This is a very low budget soapy thriller--and it makes no attempt to be anything other than entertaining. It ain't the least bit sophisticated and is a bit silly--but it IS enjoyable on a low-brow level. Just sit back and watch the fireworks. I guarantee you won't be bored!

"Three Bad Sisters" begins with a plane crash. A rich guy is killed--leaving his vast fortune to three really screwed up but beautiful daughters (sort of like really bad versions of Hilton girls). One daughter, Valerie (Kathleen Hughes), is greedy and wants to force the pilot of the plane, Jim, to work with her to somehow cheat her sisters out of the money--but how is never really stated. The guy (John Bromfield) seems to have no choice and comes to stay with the family on a trumped up pretense. He soon learns that one of the sisters, Lorna (Sara Shane), is emotionally unstable and seems to be struggling with suicidal impulses--and she's by far the best of the bunch! Vicki (Marla Craig) is a combination nympho and home-wrecker. And, Valerie is just evil. What's Jim to do? And what exactly is Valerie's plan? Tune in to this VERY juicy film to find out more.

Subtle it's not nor is it especially believable. But, it also it great fun and the actors do pretty well with what they've been given. Sure, a few characters are a bit broadly written but it never bores...never. It's sort of like a poor man's "Peyton Place"...on crack! I'd not say it's a great film but it's a wonderful guilty pleasure--the sort of overwrought trash that can be very difficult NOT to watch.

Watch Seven Men from Now Trailer :

Review :

Another expertly crafted Western from Boetticher and Scott.

Seven Men from Now is directed by Budd Boetticher and produced by John Wayne's Batjac Productions. Written by Burt Kennedy it stars Randolph Scott, Gail Russell & Lee Marvin. Music is by Henry Vars & William H. Clothier photographs out of the Alabama Hills and Lone Pine, California.

Former Sheriff Ben Stride is on the trail of the seven men; who whilst robbing a Wells Fargo office, killed his wife in the process. Mentally tortured by having lost his job that resulted in his wife having to work at Wells Fargo, Stride is totally driven by hurt and anger. But along the way he helps a married couple who are stuck in the mud; who persuade Stride to ride West with them in case of further problems. They are then joined by a couple of suspect characters who have their own private agenda for tagging along with Stride: all parties seemingly heading for the day when the truth will out.

Director Budd Boetticher and leading Western star Randolph Scott made between 1956 and 1960, seven interesting and genre bending films. This was the first of their collaborations, and although it can be said they were merely honing their "Adult Western" bent here, all the traits that would make the upcoming The Tall T and Comanche Station so worthy of genre classic status is evident here in this film. Tho simple in plot; I mean man on a mission movies are not exactly rare are they? Seven Men From Now is boosted by a smartly ambiguous turn from Lee Marvin as Bill Masters, while Boetticher's ability to raise his complex and hungry characters above and beyond the standard tale further gives the piece some kudos. Incidents dot themselves throughout the story to keep the film from ever drifting to the mundane, while the location work at Lone Pine, Alabama Hills in California is gorgeous; where we should be thankful to cinematographer William H. Clothier for realising that Boetticher needs his vista to be another character.

Originally intended as a vehicle for John Wayne, who took producing duties instead when his schedule wouldn't allow him the time to star, Seven Men From Now gave Randolph Scott a chance to show just what a fine actor he was. His Ben Stride could so easily have been played as corny and grumpy, but Scott gives it the emotional depth that Burt Kennedy's script demanded. Gail Russell Annie Greer is the lady of the piece. She ultimately led a sad real life, but at least here as the woman caught between two men, we get to see that she did have the ability when called upon; even if this didn't relaunch her career in the way that her friend John Wayne had originally hoped for. In fact Gail was to sadly succumb to the alcoholism that blighted her life just five years later, aged just 36. Thankfully this film stands up as a fine way to remember her beauty and for the efforts that she put into the Western genre.

Lacking the heavy cloud of doom of Boetticher & Scott's best collaborations, this one, however, boasts richly interesting characters that are telling a cunning moral allegory tale. It be an Oater for those who like intelligence over yippee ki-yay like histrionics. 8/10

One of Two films about Northern Raiders in the Civil War

As I have mentioned previously there are a limited number of commercial films about the American Civil War. Most people will instantly say GONE WITH THE WIND, but much of that film deals with the ante - bellum South before war begins, and an hour and a half deals with Georgia under Reconstruction into the late 1870s. There is the twin films GODS AND GENERALS about the rise and fall of the magnificent military partnership of Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, and GETTYSBURG. There is also THE HORSE SOLDIER about Grierson's Raid into Mississippi during the Vicksburg Campaign. There was the "Shiloh" segment of the HOW THE WEST WAS WON about the battle there. There was THE RAID about the attack of the Confederate Raiders from Canada on St. Albans, Vermont in the summer of 1864. Quantrell and his raiders appear in several films, most notably DARK COMMAND. There is also the prototype for GONE WITH THE WIND about the collapse of southern society called SO RED THE ROSE.

It is notable that the emphasis is on raiders from the southern states or with southern sympathies (William Quantrell or Cantrell, or the St. Alban Raiders). But there are two films on one incident where the raiders were Northern raiders - the raid led by John J. Andrews in his celebrated February 1862 snatch of the locomotive "The General" in an attempt to damage southern railroad tracks and bridges in Georgia and Tennessee. The incident has ended up being the most discussed military operation of the land forces of the Civil War in film. First it was immortalized in what may have been the funniest war comedy ever made, Buster Keaton's THE GENERAL (1927). But Keaton, using the Andrews raid as a start, changed the story by having the Union raiders succeed for awhile in bringing the Confederate locomotive to Union lines and has his southern hero "Johnny Gray" steal it back. Unfortunately, Andrews and his raiders never had such luck. Indeed their fates were quite savage in reality.

This 1956 film by Walt Disney is not as well known as Keaton's classic, but it come closer to being factually correct. It shows the planning of the scheme by Northern spy Andrews and his picked crew, how they stole the "General" in a surprise act when the train was getting refilled, and how they ran it for a twenty mile chase until the train reached the end of it's coal supply. Here the reality of the story gets more savage. Andrews and his men fled into the forests of Tennessee, and were tracked down by Southern troops who recaptured most of them. Andrews and several others were hung. The other captured raiders were sent to prison camps.

For people who only think of Fess Parker as Walt Disney's "Davy Crockett" may be fascinated to see he played another role for that producer - and did a good job at it. And like the last episode of the series about the "King of the Wild Frontier", Parker's character died heroically, but violently again.

Review :

Some above average elements, uneven, well written

This starts out as seeming like it's going to be a typical low budget western, but the script helps lift it later on.

The first third of the film is the weakest element. Watching Burr's poor stunt double and then watching the real Burr climbing up and down off of horses is not a real encouraging start. But the by the numbers set up has some unusual pay off elements later. Burr is fun, as he always was playing a bad guy, his career is a testament to changing and image as he became a highly successful good guy on television for the rest of his life after a career as bad guys in supporting parts in films. He's really a supporting player in this film too as there is a large section in which his character is off screen.

Once the movie settles down with the mismatched group --Bad guys, good guys, English father and daughter, Mexican and Native Americans who are all stuck in a house and the possibility of Spanish gold nearby the plot takes some nice twists and turns. The script introduces a few elements of racial tension and bigotry but these elements don't work very well with the poor performances of non-Indian actors in these parts.

The film seems to be a totally low budget bad guys on the run from a posse affair when it starts but don't give up on it. The photography by later A list DP (Credited here as Ben Kline, later to be known as Benjamin H. Kline) helps and elevates it throughout. There is/ are some poor stunt doubles in a few spots and a really poor rubber snake.

But on the plus side there is a large scale flashback scene to a set bound battle, and there is a well done real outdoor series of scenes with a character searching out clues to the missing gold. There are some not bad, for the time, special effects and the highlight of the film is a longish fist fight that goes on against and across various steep cliffs---it would make a good scene for a James Bond film. And there is some nice plot shifting that will lead you to wonder just who the heroes and bad guys really may be.

Too bad the supporting parts aren't better acted and more convincingly cast. It's a short movie with its heart in fast pace and B action, but that actually helps the film. Also this isn't necessarily a western, this plot could work just as well in other settings. Not that that makes the film good or bad, just another slightly unusual element in a film that has some usual low budget problems. The movie seems to use some stock footage in spots though this is pretty well done. The films virtues, and pretty well done script, help off=set these problems, if not totally overcoming its faults.

Review :

Entertaining and highly recommendable film as a historical document, where topics such as patriotism, dignity and integrity.

During the second world war, and to the German pressure for Spain's involvement in this, the volunteers formed a division (which was, the legendary film director Luis Garcia Berlanga), comprised of some 40,000 men, which name of the fight against communism (though not the only motivations were those that drove these men to enlist, as also were those who enlisted out of a desire to curry favor with the regime by defeated in the civil war, love of adventure, etc. ..) were sent to the Russian front to fight the Germans.

The film tells the story of a handful of these men led by Captain "Adrados" were taken prisoner by the Soviets in a labor camp and sorrows and hardships suffered because of his staunch refusal to accept the ideas of their captors. We are introduced to Captain as a man of a part, immune to discouragement and despite being transferred to other fields of work, always rebel, so just in Siberia sentenced to 25 years, always as a fierce anti-communist.

The film is based on a series of interviews, then published in the book "Embajadores en el infierno" 1955, and made by Torcuato Luca de Tena on Captain Palacios (captain Adrados in the film). The performances are convincing and cold environment of such cruel concentration camps, is well done, showing how the time is natural given the current regime and a great patriot and anti-Communist fervor.

The viewer should not be blinded by a simplistic ideological point of view. You should try to understand more deeply the circumstances that the film is about and then be able to see virtues in it, such as interpretations, far superior to most that can be seen today in Spanish cinema.

"Embajadores en el infierno" is a beautiful film in the sense of patriotic love of country from which one proceeds, which you feel nostalgia, where one has left its roots and his family, where the flavors and foods more seen in life,

In this film that played exceptionally topics such as patriotism, dignity and integrity, not missing a magnificent assortment of dialogue and good scenes

Entertaining and strongly recommended as a historical document.

Review :

Charming matinée thrills

Rolf Husbergs 1956 film Moln över Hellesta possibly takes its cue from Hitchcock's Rebecca as much as from its literary original by Margit Söderholm. Count Carl Anckarberg (Birger Malmsten) brings his fiancée Margareta Snellman (Anita Björk) home to his family estate for the first time. But ominous clouds are gathering in the form of a mysterious past. The count's previous fiancée drowned in the nearby lake seven years ago and as Margareta moves in to one of the guest rooms strange things begin to happen, someone is lurking in the shadows, seemingly intent on scaring her away from Hellesta. There is a ghostly face, nightly visits to her room and a near disastrous car mishap, she is even locked in the local church. Margareta learns that these incidents echo the events leading up to her predecessor's untimely death. There is even rumors about a curse, or a ghost haunting any fiancée of the count. And in the greenhouse even the roses never bloom… However, not easily discouraged the crafty Margareta embarks on her own investigation between the seemingly never-ending dinners, breakfasts and coffees of high society life. Can she solve the puzzle before it is too late and she becomes another casualty of the curse of Hellesta? All in all Husbergs film is certainly clichéd and it does move along at an all too pedestrian pace, but it's its virtually brimful of redeeming traits. For one the setting is marvelous, filmed at the beautiful Hofsta estate, in Björkvik, Södermanland. Secondly Torbjörn Lundquist (known for his music for the thrillers of Arne Mattsson) supplies a lovely score. Furthermore the cast is highly amiable, and especially Anita Björk excels as the fearless amateur detective. Birgitta Andersson has an early supporting role as the friend of the dead fiancée, and does a colorful job with a small part. Bullen Berglund and Sif Ruud also bring their typical charm to the film. A minor criticism would be that Malmsten is perhaps a bit on the woody side to be a believable romantic interest for the adventurous Björk, but all in all his performance is adequate. To sum it up, Moln över Hellesta exceeds it limitations on pure charm and the beauty of the scenery to make it an attractive little piece of matinée thrills.

colorfully presented but utterly uninvolving

A Jean Renoir vaudeville stars Ingrid Bergman as a Polish princess-cum-widow Elena Sokorowska in pre WWI Paris, merrily philandering with her suitors, until they are pinned down between two, the radical party general François Rollan (Marais) who is a candidate for the prime minister of the country and a romantic count Henri de Chevincourt (Ferrer).

My second Renoir's film after THE RULES OF THE GAME (1939, 8/10), ELENA AND HER MEN is on a splendid parade of polychromatism with exquisite costumes and interior decoration, whereas the movie is indulged in its own flamboyance and fecklessness, not even Juliette Gréco's superb rendition could ease the despondent frown.

Maybe it was Renoir's intention to make a film pandering for French audience and foreign Gallo- savants at its time, but the story is utterly uninvolving, all the rapid talking side characters pop up and romp around inordinately, which causes great trouble to comprehend what is going on on the screen, soon or later, all of them will inexplicably lapses into ridiculous buffoons, and more unsatisfying is that there is never enough room for viewers to savor the farce.

Bergman has a gregarious presence in this light-hearted rom-com, a skip-deep socialite can equally excel in conquering any man she wants and appeasing any man she deserts, with her charm daisy. Two besotted gentlemen, either the aristocratic and uptight Marias or the more characterless Ferrer, fail to make strong impact other than a convenient pawn to be blindly swept off his feet by Elena ever since the first glance.

Supporting roles galore, Jean Richard is Rollan's guard Hector, fights for the love of Lolotte (Noël), Elena's young maid, with Eugéne (Jouanneau), Elena's soon-to-be son-in-law, and truly, Elena is going to remarry with shoe businessman Mr. Martin-Michaud (Bertin), and their will be a double wedding with Eugéne marries his fiancée Denise (Nadal), things are all mismanaged under a political turbulence which one might find it difficult to decipher with its fast pace. Not to mention Rollan's quartet political corp, things could not be more messier.

Renoir certainly is still good at his trick with various characters bungle together within a carefully measured frame, but it doesn't change much for the haphazard love-triangle, in the end, one can only wish it could end as soon as possible, since our rationality determines that it doesn't worth all the effort.

Vampiri, I (1956)

** (out of 4)

Riccardo Freda directed horror film about the police investigation into the discovery of several dead women whose bodies have been drained of blood. Today this film is best remembered as being the first Italian horror film of the sound era as well as being the first film directed by Mario Bava who took the chair after Freda walked away from the project. As with many other Gothic horror films, this one looks nice but while trying to create atmosphere, the director(S) seemed to have forgotten the story, which isn't too interesting. Like many others, the film also features way too much talk, which gets tiresome after a while. The cinematography by Bava is certainly the highlight. Paul Muller has a small role.

Well made but dramatically awkward not to mention extremely manipulative emotionally to the point of silliness

Hugo Haas was a writer/director/ star who made a good number of films that are best described as boiled over potboilers. They are deep meaningful films that pull at one's emotions like a supped up tractor at a tractor pull. Over done and over blown doesn't begin to describe it. I find it amazing that he managed to make as many films as he did. Then again for all the bathic content they are technically well made, and somewhat amusing. The plot here follows a skid row bum and his dog as they try to make enough money to get by and the interactions they have with the people they meet. It's a sad little film, brightened by the occasionally humorous line. I watched the film and squirmed at all of the forced emotion. I couldn't believe that the downtrodden life could me turned into such a soap opera. It was an endurance test. Actually the ending, and its "happy" turn about almost made sitting through this silly film. I could see it coming and I sat watching incredulous at what was going on, were they really going to do it? Yea they did. Tragedy has rarely been so laugh inspiring.

Simple but entertaining

Straightforward but solid "B" programmer about coastal smugglers who use a pearl diving operation to sneak aliens into Australia.

This was the second feature produced by Southern International - a company formed by Chips Rafferty and director Lee Robinson. Shot on location around northern Queensland.

Crude but fast paced and made effective use of its exotic locales.

Returned a healthy profit both locally and overseas.

Now primarily of historical interest as it showcased the talents of future Hollywood star Rod Taylor in his first big screen appearance.

Simple but entertaining.

QUEEN OF BABYLON (Carlo Ludovico Bragaglia, 1954) **1/2

A friend of mine – who, apart from being a well-known local film-buff, occasionally invites me (and three like-minded others) to his old-fashioned home theater to watch 16mm prints of vintage Hollywood movies – had, during our periodical meetings, often voiced his wish to revisit the movie under review. Therefore, when I was later contacted by an enthusiastic American film collector that happened to have a vast amount of titles in this vein at his disposal, I naturally acceded to his earnest request. Now that the Easter season is just around the corner, I was curious to learn what the fuss was all about and, naturally, I immediately got around to watching it as part of my annual Epic movie marathon.

I would be lying if I said that I was expecting to be overwhelmed by an Italian peplum whose only capsule review I was aware of (Leonard Maltin's) merely awarded it a *1/2 rating. But I was not really prepared for what I eventually got either: if this film were any campier, Indian chieftains would have convened in it to hold their war councils! Right from the outset, I was in for a laugh-out-loud moment when one of two horsemen is seen having trouble descending from his steed (ostensibly to cut off two corpses hung from a tree and give them a decent burial)…by which time soldiers from the opposing army reach them and kill hero Ricardo Montalban's elderly lieutenant (which, naturally, sets the revenge plot in motion). Besides, we are supposed to believe that a stunning redhead like Rhonda Fleming is an abandoned child of nature that lives blissfully with her animals in a cave (and yet her first appearance has her stretched out on a rock soaking in the sun and splashing in the water!); when the Assyrians attack the village in search of Montalban and in retaliation for Fleming's harboring of him, the soldiers leave just one woman alive (having been spared for being too old)!; a brutish Assyrian thug rapes Fleming when he traps her in the cave; the captured girls dim-wittedly display their dancing skills when they are offered a chance of survival by performing before the King (but, obviously, they are able to learn the intricate choreography overnight!); Montalban proves remarkably resilient throughout – when pierced with an arrow early on, he promptly removes this to impale a soldier on it and, again, during a particularly animated tavern brawl!; in an obvious attempt to out-do the man-eating lions from QUO VADIS (1951), here we get victims being fed to alligators…only these appear much smaller (being clearly younger) when the protagonist grapples with them in a pool for the King's amusement – naturally, while they get to kill their fair share of people, the stout Montalban effortlessly defeats one reptile after another!; the final confrontation, then, between Montalban and chief villain Carlo Ninchi is carelessly handled in a silent, hurried fashion!

In the past, I have checked out a quartet of Bragaglia (who died at the venerable age of 103!)'s genre efforts – notably HANNIBAL (1959; co-directed with Edgar G. Ulmer) and AMAZONS OF ROME (1961; co-directed with Vittorio Cottafavi); however, during my ongoing schedule, I should also be getting to his THE SWORD AND THE CROSS (1958) and THE FOUR MUSKETEERS (1963), while I might also be able to acquire the well-regarded THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS (1958). Similarly, renowned scribe Ennio De Concini contributed to innumerable such entries from 1948-63. As for the two leads, I recently watched Fleming (whose career seemingly lost its momentum after 1960) in YANKEE PASHA and have William Castle's SERPENT OF THE NILE – THE LOVES OF CLEOPATRA (both 1954) set up for the near-future; with respect to her co-star, I have MARK OF THE RENEGADE (1951) and THE SARACEN BLADE (1954; also by Castle) lined up. Supporting them here are Roldano Lupi (a Pedro Armendariz look-alike playing the historical figure of King Assur) and Tamara Lees (wife of actor Bonar Colleano in real-life). Finally, and for the record, other films to be found within this Mesopotamian subgenre are SLAVES OF BABYLON (1953; yet another William Castle entry) and THE HERO OF BABYLON (1963; which I have just acquired) – both of which are upcoming viewings – as well as WAR GODS OF BABYLON (1962; which I watched not too long ago) and I AM SEMIRAMIS (1963; one I foolishly missed out on Italian TV).

well-paced nonsense

Julie moves along at breakneck speed to its bizarre ending in an airplane, in some ways reminiscent of 911. Within the first few moments of the film Doris Day is running from her murdering jealous husband well played by Louis Jourdan as Lyle, an unbalanced concert pianist. The opening is set in Carmel, CA, and the film would have been a whole lot better if it had stayed there but instead it shifts to San Francisco. The opening scene, with the crazed Lyle pressing his foot on his wife's as she's driving, and thus accelerating the car is terrific, as he has his arm around her, not looking at the road, only at her, and she's in a panic, trying to control the gigantic two-toned Chrysler on the twisty road, unable to decelerate, an unwilling student in some kind of speed driving lesson. As she has enough of this she decides to resurrect her previous career as an airline steward, but Lyle follows her wherever she goes. This relentless chase is comically narrated by Doris Day. The film starts losing energy, and the final climax, which is supposed to be exciting, is badly done.
